Due to very high fire danger, the extended weather forecast, and current fire activity in the State of Colorado, Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are now in effect within Rocky Mountain National Park. When Stage 2 Fire Restrictions are in effect, this means that all campfires, including charcoal briquette fires are not permitted anywhere within Rocky Mountain National Park. This ban is effective beginning today, June 29, and will remain in effect until further notice.

Weather & Seasons
Rocky Mountain National Park is a high-elevation alpine environment — most of the park sits above 8,000 feet, and many trails climb above treeline. Summers bring warm days but sudden afternoon thunderstorms, especially above treeline where lightning is a real hazard. Winters are cold and snowy, with Trail Ridge Road closed roughly mid-October through Memorial Day. Spring and fall offer milder weather and thinner crowds, but expect snow at any elevation, any month.

Rocky Mountain National Park has two gateway towns on opposite sides: Estes Park to the east, about 90 minutes from Denver, and Grand Lake to the west, about 2.5 hours from Denver via US-40. Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuously paved highway in the US, connects the two sides through the park — but only when it's open (roughly late May through mid-October).
Best Time to Visit
June through September has the best weather and full road access, but also the biggest crowds — the park uses a Timed Entry Permit system during peak season to manage visitor numbers. September and early October bring the elk rut, one of the park's signature seasonal events, especially around Estes Park's meadows. Winter offers a quieter, snow-covered park on the Estes Park side, though Trail Ridge Road is closed and Grand Lake access is limited.
